TEACH QUALITY

It is important for you to develop in your students a concept of quality. Often my students come into lessons and perform assigned pieces. It is then my job to give them specific instructions on how to make it sound better. Do not be afraid to reassign a lesson with the focus on specific tasks designed for improving the quality of performance.

Some examples of suggestions to achieve higher quality:

  1. Let's use dynamics. (Write them down)
  2. More consistent time. (assign metronome marking)
  3. Articulation. (play long notes long)
  4. Tone quality. (assign specific exercise to develop bigger sound)
  5. Own the music. (memorize)
  6. Get it into you vocabulary. (Learn in new key)
  7. Listen to a great player doing this piece. (Imitate)
  8. Record yourself playing the piece and listen for these particulars.
