It has only taken me about 25 years to begin to refine my playing. I was told to do this a couple of times in my past by highly respected musicians. I understood the meaning of their words but I did not hear the difference between refined and unrefined playing. Probably, I was told to do this many times and just did not hear that either.

Today I teach my students to refine their playing by having them copy the Masters. To quote one student, after he had transcribed and performed many songs by great players and his improvisation began taking on the characteristics of these Masters: "What was all that stuff I was playing before?"
